Undoubtedly, looking for a job can be stressful and frustrating. We experience mixed emotions during the process, from the excitement of getting a job interview to the disappointment of rejection. However, there are several things you can do to approach your job search with confidence, reduce stress, and make the process less daunting.
1) Reflect on your strengths, talents, and experiences: You have a unique set of skills, talents, and experiences that ONLY you possess and that many potential employers out there will need to improve their bottom line. It is the hard truth that we don't always think about or don't want to believe because we are too busy doubting ourselves or humble to admit. You need to approach your job search with this mindset. Quit approaching your job search with a "looser mindset" and always bringing to the table the power dynamics and assuming you need the employer more than they do.
2) Articulate your strengths, talents, and experience: Don't just say you have the competencies for the job; be able to explain what you are good at. What are your soft and hard skills? What experience do you currently have that would be relevant in your next job? What courses did you complete for recent graduates that would help you in your future career? Write all this on paper in simple words or type on your computer. It becomes easy to market yourself once you can articulate what distinguishes you from others.
3) Reflect on what you want: Consider the types of jobs and industries that interest you, whether you prefer non-profit or for-profit organizations, and if the size and mission of the organization matter to you. You need to think about those things and write down what is most important to you to structure your job search and approach it more strategically.
4) Create an action plan and track your progress: Treat your job search as a full-time job and plan how much time you will dedicate daily and weekly to various tasks such as sending applications, updating your resume, and researching companies. Set SMART daily and weekly goals, use tracking tools to monitor your progress, and adjust as needed.
Following the advice above, you will make your job search productive and exciting. As Walt Disney said, "All our dreams can come true if we dare to pursue them."
